Stuologil Canyon

Hey look, another canyon! Driving up to Stuologil Canyon was a bit dicey and the signage once you’re there is… not great. While a beautiful spot, against the rest of Iceland this one is far from a must see. We’ll save you the drive with a couple of photos. What you can’t tell from these pictures is that there’s a pretty cool staircase that takes you down into the canyon (sorta) which made for the lower shots you see below.

Grjotagja Cave (from Game of Thrones)

This wasn’t super far out of the way and it’s about a 2 minute attraction. You literally park at the mouth of the cave and then take about 4 steps into it. It’s very pretty, but volcanic activity has rendered it fairly unsafe (the water will boil you alive) and there’s not much more to do than poke your head in.

And here’s one with Sarah for scale (and so you can laugh at her in her bug net)

Dimmuborgir Lava Fields

These weren’t super interesting and didn’t photograph well, but in the interest of being complete – here they are. I will say this spot has nice leisurely hiking (almost no elevation change) so if you’re looking for a break from driving this is a good place to stretch your legs. However, as you see in the photos, a bug net is essential. It would have been unbearable without them. This is where we stop making fun of Sarah for the nets and thank her.

Dettifoss

Another big a$$ waterfall. I did a poor job of capturing this one 😥

Selfoss

Found at the same spot as Detifoss, this other big a$$ waterfall actually feeds into Detifoss. I’m dealing with a lot of internal turmoil around showing these in the order they exist in nature or the order in which we saw them. I went with the latter and now I’m moving on with my life. Thanks for stopping by!

I also took a picture of the rocks on the other side of the waterfall because I felt bad for them. They’re impressive but they have spent their lives staring at the backs of tourists just because they happened to form next to a magnificent waterfall.

I bet you didn’t know John and Joan Cusack have siblings Ann, Susie, and Bill who also act. Yeah, it’s like that. Check out these stones. Do it for the Anns, Susies, and Bills of the world.

Bonus Waterfall: Wklak4wkljrjaskljnsdccfnfoss

We pulled off the road because, as was often the case, I was starting to nod off. It just so happened there was a pretty sweet waterfall there because of course there was.
